Organizing world’s information — Answer and knowledge experiences for Microsoft Bing, Windows and Cortana
Product Design Lead, Microsoft ・ 2014 - 2019
Design lead for several knowledge experiences for search on Microsoft Bing, Windows and Cortana. I designed and oversaw several domains which contributed to more than 20% of query share for Bing. Over multiple years I led experiences for Sports, Travel, QnA and Intelligence, Utilities, Weather, Finance, Entertainment and Maps.
Sports experiences
Over the years I owned the key experiences for the sports segment — Soccer, Cricket, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Golf, Tennis, Olympics and Winter Olympics.
Below are sample designs for the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2018 Winter Olympics, for which I led the design and strategy. This was the first go-big experience designed for Bing and was a big success with 5M daily active users. The experience focused on the casual Olympics fan as well as the enthusiast, with a scalable framework which would work for all 39 sports and 302 events.

Flight booking
Looking for a flight on your smartphone stinks. The flight booking experience at Bing aimed to take the pain out, analyzing billions of prices daily across booking providers. My role was to design the end to end experience for mobile and desktop, turning millions of searches into delightful experiences. Booking a flight is always a tedious, time-consuming task where the search can last from 5 minutes to weeks — we explored how to make the process simple.

Flight status
Flight tracking experiences enable users to know about a particular flight. The team also enabled seeing all flights on a route, or arriving and departing from an airport.

QnA and facts
When you have a question in mind, you often turn to a search engine to find the answer. QnA and facts form a major chunk of queries on Bing. I led the framework for answers that fulfilled user questions and provided concise responses. Below are some sample experiences out of millions of questions.

Essentials and utilities
Search engines should be good at helping with frequent questions like weather, stock price, directions and calculations. I led the experiences for essentials and utilities — Weather, Finance, Movie Showtimes, Maps, Calculator, Dictionary, Speed test, App lookup, Math operations, Unit and Time conversion, Translation and many others.

Dataviz with open data
Mapping design constructs to open data sets enables the AI to create meaningful visualizations to inform and educate users in a more concise way. Below are some of the main topics affecting the world — creating insights with visualizations can increase knowledge and awareness. You will see sample constructs that can live in the system, which the AI automatically applies to raw data to create insights.

Impact and learnings
This area of work was challenging and fulfilling as I dabbled in multiple industries. I learned a lot of the nuances of different domains and it was fun to bring the experiences to light. The designs consistently benchmarked better than Google in our internal studies, which instilled a lot of enthusiasm within the team. Overall the impact was phenomenal — it contributed to a lot of query share gain for Bing and brought real value to users.
